Anbima (Brazilian Financial and Capital Markets Association) is in China this week to strengthen ties with Asian institutional investors, financial institutions, regulators and policymakers, while promoting Brazil as a destination for international investment.
José Carlos Doherty, Anbima’s CEO, is representing the Association in Xiamen at the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) and the Future Investment Conference (FIC).
The visit is part of Anbima’s efforts to expand its international presence and deepen engagement with Asian markets, particularly China, while increasing awareness of Brazil’s financial and capital markets.
Anbima was invited to participate in the FIC through its relationship with UNCTAD (UN Trade and Development). The Association has been a member of UNCTAD’s Sustainable Investment Advisory Board since 2023, contributing the Brazilian market’s perspective to international discussions on sustainable finance and investment.
Brazil on the investment agenda
During the conference on Tuesday (Sept. 8), Doherty joined the panel “Investing in strategic sectors and emerging opportunities in a changing world,” part of a broader FIC discussion on how global investment is being reshaped by technological change, geopolitical developments and the transformation of global value chains.
The panel brought together representatives from the China International Capital Corporation (CICC), Sinovation Ventures, Hong Kong and China Gas Company (Towngas) and the Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS).
Doherty presented Brazil’s experience in developing its capital markets and discussed how long-term savings can be channeled into companies, infrastructure and other productive investments.
“Brazil has built a deep and increasingly sophisticated capital market, with the capacity to connect long-term savings to productive investment. At Anbima, we believe that strong regulation, appropriate financial instruments and, above all, trust are essential to attract capital and turn investment into sustainable economic development,” Doherty said.
He also highlighted Brazil’s model of cooperation between public and private institutions. Anbima works at the intersection of market participants and authorities, helping turn market experience into regulatory discussions and supporting the implementation of new rules and best practices across the industry.
Strategic opportunities
The discussion also looked ahead to the sectors likely to attract investment over the coming decade. Brazil has significant opportunities linked to the energy transition and bioeconomy, including clean energy and sustainable agriculture, as well as infrastructure and the digital economy.
For Anbima, developing these markets requires more than creating new financial products. Credible standards, comparable information, sound governance and investor protection are essential if sustainable finance is to become an integral part of capital allocation and reach greater scale.
Technology is another area in which the Association has been working to prepare Brazil’s financial industry for the next stage of development. Initiatives involving artificial intelligence, tokenization and distributed-ledger technology are part of efforts to foster innovation while addressing governance, operational risks and market standards.
Building bridges with Asia
The FIC is an initiative of UNCTAD organized in partnership with CIFIT. Now in its second edition, the conference brings together policymakers, international organizations, sovereign wealth funds, institutional investors, financial institutions and business leaders to discuss how international investment can support innovation, industrial development and sustainable growth.
For Anbima, participating in the events in Xiamen provides an opportunity both to present the progress made by Brazil’s financial and capital markets and to learn more about developments in China and other Asian markets.
Strengthening these connections is part of a longer-term effort to reduce information gaps between the regions and deepen cooperation in areas such as cross-border investment, sustainable finance and financial innovation. It also reinforces Brazil’s position in global investment discussions and its links with one of the world’s most important sources of capital.
